The Summer Institutes are no cost, professional development courses offered for technology high school teachers and college faculty in Massachusetts. Courses will be offered at Bristol Community College, Bunker Hill Community College, Quinsigamond Community College and the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Week of July 4 – July 9, 2011

Introduction to New Media Design with Adobe CS5 CANCELED – new class date of July 12 and 13

This introductory course examines new media and specific software to create vector illustration images and utilizing page layout techniques (Illustrator and In Design). The educators will learn to use essential tools in the software programs while learning design concepts and vector drawing with Wacom tablet using Photoshop templates. Color theory and compositional principles will also be discussed through hands on exercises. Topics include vector and raster file formats, creating and drawing images, using typographic techniques, layout and preparing images for placement. PDF and E publication will also be addressed. Class time is divided between lecture, discussions, demos and studio periods.

Google Places helps to connect a business to customers. And there are many more productivity tools used to take bright ideas into the marketplace: Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Groups, Google Cloud –and now there’s even a Google Video Channel. Explore the possibilities in this hands-on session.

Algorithmic Thinking is at the core of Computational Thinking, yet algorithm design and analysis is typically part of an upper level computer science course.  In this seminar, we will explore how to introduce algorithm selection, analysis, and testing in an introductory computing course.  Topics will include efficiency, correctness, sorting and searching, and recursion.  We will present exercises and labs in BYOB, a variant of Scratch.  No computer science experience is required for this seminar.

A four-day lecture-lab course intended to provide participants with exposure to computer forensics, including a session in mobile forensics. The course will teach computer forensics topics both from the perspective of a practitioner and instructor, with the end goal of assisting new teachers to prepare to learn more about, and instruct, this material. The engagement will be highly interactive, so as to address the issues of most importance to the attendees. Prerequisites: Strong familiarity with computers and some exposure to networks, and at least passing familiarity with computer forensics.

The curriculum offers a comprehensive and theoretical learning experience for analytical students, and uses language that aligns well with engineering concepts. Exploration can be delivered as an independent curriculum or integrated into a broader course of study, such as degree programs in IT, engineering, math, or science.

VMware  REGISTER

This hands-on training course explores installation, configuration, and management of VMware vSphereTM, which consists of ESX/ESXi and vCenter Server. The course is based on ESX/ESXi 4.1 and vCenter Server 4.1. Completion of this course satisfies as a prerequisite to take the VMware Certified Professional 4 exam. This training is a blended course. There is a mandatory orientation and capstone session. Each session will be delivered virtually via webex. You will also receive a webex invitation one day prior to the orientation and capstone sessions. The ORIENTATION SESSION is Friday, July 29 from 10 – noon. Should you be unable to attend the orientation please contact us right away to see if there is another session you may attend.  In-person classes are August 1st, 2nd & 3rd. The CAPSTONE SESSION is Friday, August 12th from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Are you interested in fostering student engagement, promoting social learning and building your students capacity to participate in the 21st Century workforce? This interactive, hands-on session provides instructors with tools for making online courses more fun, interactive and engaging. We will investigate how easy it is to integrate videoconferencing (using a free web-based application, Skype™) and web-based collaborative writing tools (such as Google Docs) to create collaborative learning experiences and ultimately build students’ capacity to participate in virtual teams. We will look at how Twitter can promote social learning and connect students not only to coursework but also their own personal learning networks.  This session offers practical solutions for creating team- and project-/problem-solving approaches necessary for the world of work in the 21st century. Instructional design principles will be discussed and examples of activities will be shared.

 iJava is a web-based interactive textbook for elementary Java instruction. It is suitable for beginners with no previous programming experience.
